Alba-Technic, LLC receives $250,000 from Head Health Challenge III
Closing 2015 with a $250,000 award from the Head Health Challenge III and with total research funds exceeding $1.4 million to date, Alba-Technic is a company worth watching. Alba-Technic’s advanced protection for fall mitigation, SMARTY®, was originally developed for retirement communities to reduce the risk of injury for adults that want to remain active. However the application of this technology and the unmet needs in the marketplace do not stop there.
In early 2015 when the NFL, Under Armour, GE and NIST put together an open innovation competition for new impact-absorbing materials, the Head Health Challenge III, Alba-Technic responded.
From 125 teams, 21 were selected for lab testing, and 5 were named as finalists – Alba-Technic, one of Larta’s NIH-CAP participants, was one of them.
Alba-Technic’s patented shock-absorbent material is architected in a honeycomb structure (EVO2™) with an outer layer that actively responds to impact to divert energy. The material is normally soft and compliant, but upon impact, the outer layer immediately changes into a hard shell to spread the energy over the honeycomb matrix.
As a finalist company, Alba-Technic received $250,000 in funding to refine their materials and designs with support, feedback and additional data from the Head Health III partners: GE and NIST. By the end of 2016, the team with the best impact absorbing material will receive an additional $500,000 for further research and development.
Congratulations Alba-Technic, we look forward to working with you this year and seeing what you will accomplish in 2016!
