Far from our shores. Is New Zealand the last frontier?
In May, Rohit Shukla traveled to Auckland, New Zealand as a member of Mayor Eric Garcetti’s delegation to the Tripartite Economic Summit – the second event featuring the sister cities of Los Angeles, Auckland and Guangzhou, China and aimed at setting a new standard for how modern cities can engage and collaborate in the 21st Century. Rohit, who also spoke at the 2015 inaugural tripartite event in Los Angeles, kicked off the trip speaking on a Tripartite panel about mega trends in high value foods. He was the only Tripartite panelist to suggest next steps for the tri-city partnership.
While Rohit was in Auckland he had been asked to speak to the movers and shakers of New Zealand’s economy about how to globally commercialize their domestic innovation.
Rohit asserted that Kiwis should not allow the tyranny of distance to cause them to suffer “the tyranny of reduced expectations.” He also suggested they might see better results if they simplified their commercialization approach, and, given New Zealand’s small size and need to scale effectively, they should share resources widely and deeply. He provided many examples drawn from New Zealand in his remarks throughout the visit.
Rohit’s successful trip was in no small part thanks to Auckland insider, Darryn Keiller, a successful consultant to high-technology companies, who dialed in Rohit to the Auckland movers and shakers of the new economy and secured his many speaking engagements.
Rohit’s itinerary included:
- Rohit joined a panel at PcW’s Herald Talks, focusing on New Zealand innovation and how to access a global market. The panel was moderated by NZ Herald’s lead business journalist, Fran O’Sullivan. You can view the highlight reel here.
- The American Chamber of Commerce in New Zealand hosted a lunch where Rohit spoke to businesses about succeeding in the U.S., accelerating and commercializing early stage companies globally and global trends in agriculture, food and nutrition.
- HiTech Awards Alumni Summit also invited Rohit to speak as one of their keynote speakers to inform, inspire and guide early stage innovators on commercialization. Rohit finished the week-long trip, as one of the International Judges at the HiTech Awards Gala.
